The Tenants: Concrete Portraits of the Former Eastern Bloc
The Tenants: Concrete Portraits of the Former Eastern Bloc
The concept of a housing block dates back to pre-war France. Part architectural manifesto, part political statement, housing blocks were designed to meet every basic human need and provide space for much-needed socialising. Communal laundries, playgrounds, gardens, sports fields, and meeting halls were as integral to the block as access to services, schools, health centers, and public transport. The Tenants, much like the Brutalist architecture which inspired it, centres the stories and vignettes of the people living in the blocs. Landscape, quarter cloth-bound, full colour.
